The largest country in South America occupies nearly 50% of the South American continent. Around 58% of Brazil is covered with forests, which include the largest rainforest in the world, located in the Amazon River basin. Independent since 1822 from Portuguese ruling, you will find three basic racial sources for the Brazilian people. To the original inhabitants (Indians) were added successive waves of Europeans (mainly Portuguese) and Africans (mostly from the sub-Saharan west coast). In the 16th century, the area which is now Brazil was inhabited by several hundred Indigenous tribes who, while racially similar, spoke different languages and had different cultures. Today Brazil's native Indians number about 250,000. They are divided into roughly 200 groups and they speak some 180 different languages. The Indians live in vast areas (328,185 sq. miles [850,000 sq. km]), equal to ten percent of Brazil's total territory, which has been set aside from them by the Federal Government. In these areas, which total more than twice the size of the state of California, the Indians are free to preserve their life-style. |

With over 5000 miles of coastline, the list of beaches well worth your visit is endless. No less than 14 extraordinary ecotourism destinations represent the incredible diversity Brazil has to offer. The Amazon rainforest is the largest and covers an area equivalent to over half of the continental United States of America.
Discover the area of the
Amazon and the Rio Negro, " the lungs of the planet", where you will
learn medicinal secrets of the endangered and, in many cases, extinct
indigenous tribes, drink water from the insides of trees, watch
monkeys swing through the canopy. An endless "Water-world", home to
piranhas, pink dolphins and the anaconda. The unknowns of this area are
a fact; new species of birds and fish are still found as of today.
