The name "Goathemala" was given by the Spanish conquistadores, and derives from indigenous words meaning "Land of many trees". From the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD, the lowlands of Petén and Izabal regions were inhabited by several indigenous states of Mayan ethnicity. The Spanish failed to conquer the Alta Verapaz area by force, but its influence entered through the Church. A few missionaries, most notably Fr. Bartolomé de las Casas defended the native population from the cruelty of the Spanish army. The mysterious world of the Maya is alive today in Guatemala in its amazing temples and enchanting ruins that dot the landscape of this lush tropical country. |

Tikal was once the center of the Mayan world, and is now one of the most important and spellbinding ruins in the region. Guatemala is mountainous, except
for the south coastal area and the north vast lowlands of Petén
department. Its climate is hot tropical – more temperate in the
highlands, and drier in the easternmost departments. The appeal of Guatemala lies in its stunning natural beauty. You can explore deserted beaches on the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, virgin jungles, active volcanoes, lush rainforests, and last but not least Lake Atitlan, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, with three spectacular volcanoes as a natural backdrop. |
