The quarter-mile, crescent-shaped, white sand Poipu Beach fronts Sheraton Kauai Resort. The marine wildlife at Poipu is plentiful and varied, and not all of it is underwater.  From December through April, whale watching is good even from the shore as the large humpback whales spout and breach as they pass on their way to or from their winter feeding grounds in Hawaii. Pods of Spinner Dolphins often trail in the wake of fishing/snorkeling boats and Green Sea Turtles, another endangered species, can be seen swimming just offshore.

Almost every room in the Beach and Ocean Wings faces the sea. Of course, some might argue that Kauai's most spectacular landscape lies 180 degrees from the beach. So while half the resort embraces the sand, the other - the Garden Wing - is a splurge of ginger, anthurium, heliconia and fern. Just steps from the guest rooms, small waterfalls echo with a sound like bells.

Both wings, embracing a total of 413 rooms and suites, unfold in open buildings no taller than coconut trees, ranging from two to four stories in height, a far cry from the typical hotel.

Sheraton Kauai Resort has two fresh-water swimming pools. The Beach Pool is located alongside Poipu Beach and the Garden Pool is set amidst the gardens and koi-ponds in the resort's Garden Wing. Both pools have a children's pool, with the Beach Pool also having a slide and a whirlpool, while the Garden Pool has a waterfall.
