Merida, a city of about 1 million people, is the capital of the Mexican state of Yucatan. A bit isolated from the rest of the country, the state offers a wealth of history. The conquistadors found the Mayan culture to be incredibly resilient, and their attempts to eradicate Mayan tradition and religion did not succeed. Many inhabitants today are Mayan descendants. Merida is the perfect mix of a colonial city growing into a cosmopolitan destination. With Merida as your base, you can visit cathedrals, churches, museums, the famous Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Uxmal, that are in close proximity to town, haciendas, cenotes and so on.., |

The ancient city whose name means "in the mouth at the Itzae's Well", was, in its time of grandeur (between 800 and 1200 A.D.), the center of political, religious and military power in Yucatan, if not all of South-Eastern Meso America. Building on the inherited inventions and ideas of earlier civilizations such as the Olmec, the Maya developed astronomy, the calendar and hieroglyphic writing. The Maya were noted as well for elaborate and highly decorated ceremonial architecture, including temple-pyramids, palaces and observatories, all built without metal tools. Chichen Itza was a large city with a lot of inhabitants, distributed around the architectural wonders they created. There is relatively easy access to the water coming from the various caves and cenotes of the region.

Uxmal About 80 KM south of Merida on highway 261, Uxmal is one of the most well known of the Maya cities, and rated by many archaeologists as the finest. You should plan at least half a day for a visit. There has been much renovation work and the grounds are well tended. It is permitted to climb the largest structure, the Pyramid of the Magician, and the view from the top is well worth |
