Raiatea
is revered by the Tahitians as the birthplace of their religion and
culture. According to legend it was from her shores that ancient
Polynesian explorers set off for Hawaii and New Zealand. Its mountainous
interior boasts the only navigable river in French Polynesia. As the
center of religion and culture 1,000 years ago, this island has the best
preserved Marae (temple) in Polynesia.
The sister Island Tahaa, also known as the Vanilla Island, offers a glimpse of the traditional tranquil life. Spectacular bays carve into verdant hills and the coral reef surrounding it, offers as many as 60 idyllic motus (islets) to discover. |
