St. Maarten / St. Martin is a picturesque island approx. 150 miles southeast of Puerto Rico,. Only 37 square miles, the island is divided between two governments. The island of St. Maarten (the French, Spanish and English spell it St. Martin) is owned by both the Dutch and the French. The Dutch own the south part of the island, while the French own 21 square miles of the North. Though this small island is split between two owners there is an unusual peacefulness as evidenced by the very friendly people. The population amounts to  30,000 and  five languages are spoken. English is widely spoken on the island but French is the official language of the north while Dutch is the official language of the south, besides of some Spanish and Papiamento..
