Phoenix, symbolically named for a new town, that would spring from the ruins of a former civilization, started as a farming community in 1868. Boosted by the construction of Theodore Roosevelt Dam in 1906 (the first multiple-purpose dam, supplying both water and electric power), the town grew into a modern city covering almost 470 square miles with a population of 1.15 million, ranking it seventh in the nation. While Phoenix is the corporate and industrial center of the southwest it has not forgotten its past, and it has retained its long-time reputation of friendliness and concern of its citizens for one another and their government.
