HISTORY: During the 17th century, the archipelago was divided into two territorial units, one English and the other Danish. Sugarcane, produced by slave labor, drove the islands' economy during the 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1917, the US purchased the Danish portion, which had been in economic decline since the abolition of slavery in 1848. The Virgin Islands are located between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, east of Puerto Rico and are an unincorporated territory of the United States. The residents are island-spiced, friendly and quick to smile. Contemporary Virgin Islanders are literally from everywhere: as diverse as the peaceful Arawak and fierce Carib Indians---and as culturally rich as the peoples of Africa, England, Holland, Denmark, Spain, France, India and the United States. |

The United States Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John, is the most popular tourist destination in the Caribbean. Purchased from Denmark in the beginning of the 20th Century, these Islands have had a violent past, and were controlled one time by the Spanish, the English, the Dutch and the French, who sold it to a Danish Company. That diversity you still can find in the multiple cultures on the Island. St. Thomas is the most visited and a major cruise port, St. John (the smallest) is 2/3's a National Park, offering breathtaking beaches and an underwater marine park and St. Croix, the largest, has a National historic site and its twin cities offer a unique Caribbean atmosphere, with a Danish accent.

St. Thomas is the most cosmopolitan of the Virgin Islands. Charlotte Amalie's (Capital) deep-water harbor, once teeming with four-masted trading ships, now plays host to visiting cruise ships and a fleet of sail and power yachts. The wide walkway called "the apron," following Charlotte Amalie's harbor shoreline, stretches from Frenchtown at the western end of town a mile and a half to the West Indian Company dock at its eastern end, headquarters for many of the visiting cruise ships. A stroll along this marvelous horseshoe catches the flavor of the Virgin Islands. |

|
St. Thomas (32 square miles) is 13 miles long and 3 miles wide. Magens Bay (St. Thomas) is a mile-long ribbon of sand stretching between aquamarine seas and palm-laden shores. Coki Point and Sapphire provide cove-like settings and some of the most crystalline water you will find anywhere in the world. |
