The Islands Of The Bahamas consist of 700 islands and cays - thirteen of which offer exciting experiences and varying degrees of solitude that can change depending on the month of the year.

Nassau and Paradise Island, Grand Bahama Island, Eleuthera, Abaco, Bimini, Andros and Exuma are our best-known destinations. The types of experiences and vacationers vary from island to island. 

The most popular months are in the first quarter, with September offering the best opportunity to avoid the crowds. Generally all the destinations follow this monthly pattern with The Out Islands -- Bimini, Eleuthera, Abaco, Exuma and all other islands outside of Nassau and Paradise Island and Grand Bahama Island -- showing even less activity in September and October.

The Islands Of The Bahamas gained independence from Great Britain on July 10, 1973, which is celebrated as Bahamian Independence Day. As a member of the British Commonwealth, The Islands Of The Bahamas has a symbolic link to Great Britain, with an appointed Governor-General representing the Queen of England.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus made his first landfall in the New World on the island of San Salvador in the eastern Bahamas. After observing the shallow sea around the islands, he said "baja mar" (low water or sea), and  named the area The Bahamas, or The Islands of the Shallow Sea.

Since it was located close to Florida and well-traveled shipping channels, The Islands Of The Bahamas caught the attention of explorers, settlers, invaders and traders. These people shaped the colorful history of The Bahamas and made the country what it is today. 

Bahamian culture is like no other. It has embraced a panorama of native customs of the indigenous "Indian" people who populated the Islands. Bahamian culture suddenly underwent an abrupt change beginning in 1648 when English Puritans settled on the island of Eleuthera.  It has further evolved over the past four centuries, witnessing the arrival of Bermudan slaves and free blacks, British Loyalists (accompanied by slaves) fleeing America after the War of Independence, freed Africans from slave ships, Black Seminoles from Florida, people from other Caribbean islands, as well as Chinese, Syrian and Greek immigrants.
