A small, lush tropical island that is still relatively unknown. St. Lucia is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, one of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barbados. The Atlantic Ocean lies on its eastern shore, the west coast lies on the Caribbean Sea.

In natural beauty it seems like an island plucked from the South Pacific and set down in the Caribbean. Its dramatic twin coastal peaks, the Pitons, soar 2,000 feet up from the sea, sheltering magnificent rain forests where wild orchids, giant ferns, and birds of paradise flourish. History:

Traces from Arawak & Carib Indian civilization found from around 800 AD. The first European to settle was Francois Le Clerc, known as Jambe de Bois or Wooden Leg. He was a pirate who set himself up on Pigeon Island. From there he attacked passing Spanish ships. The Dutch established a base at Vieux Fort around 1600. Since than, St. Lucia was subject to the European Caribbean battles, which made it change hands more than 14 times between England & France. Since 1814 the British crown ruled the island until 1979, when it became independent. It remains a member of the British Commonwealth.

The island's steep coastlines and lovely reefs offer excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. The rainforest preserves in the mountainous interior are one of the Caribbean's finest locales for hiking and bird watching. Of course, the island also possesses excellent facilities for golf, tennis, sailing, and a host of other leisure pursuits. Not to be missed is the Soufriere volcano, the world's only drive-in volcanic crater.
